INTERNET WEBSITES Whether you're looking for used gear, a songwriters organization to help you get oriented to the industry in a new town, information on copyright, a book explaining publishing or record deals, hearing a new group, or to talk with someone with similar interests, the web is your new community. There are thousands of music related websites out there now and growing exponentially. Once you get into it, it can be a bottomless time pit so I've put together several of my favorite information sites relating to songwriting in particular. Several of them are valuable as starting points because of their links to other good info sites. Cat Cohen.com Cat Cohen is a pro songwriter and excellent teacher. He wrote the "Writing Music" chapter of John Braheny's "The Craft and Business of Songwriting." Music articles, hit song analysis, links, consulting services. The Copyright Office If you want straight answers to your copyright questions (No, it's not okay if you only copy two bars!) and free downloads of all the forms you need to protect yourself, go to the source. Independent Songwriter Web Magazine An online magazine featuring the same variety of craft and business articles as most paper magazines. Good stuff. Li'l Hanks Guide For Songwriters Hal Cohen has put together a great service with his Open Mic and Showcase Guide for singers and bands wanting to find exposure in the L.A. area including feedback from thase who¹ve played the clubs as well as his Schmoozarama Message Board inviting info from other cities around the country. Also songwriting, legal and biz articles and stories from industry vets and great links. Luboffs, Pat and Pete Authors of "88 Songwriting Wrongs and How To Right Them" and "12 Steps to Writing Better Songs." Songtips, consultations, links. Jeff Mallett's Songwriter Site One of the best maintained and comprehensive songwriter sites. Don't miss this! Extensive links. The Muses Muse A great site! The pioneer of songwriting Web sites. A pretty comprehensive and helpful resource maintained by Canadian Jodi Krangle. Features lists of songwriters¹ and Music Industry organizations, useful web links, articles on songwriting, chat room, classifieds. Pamoland.com Pamela Phillips-Oland is a professional lyricist with vast talent and experience. She¹s the author of "The Art of Writing Great Lyrics." Good articles, lyric critiques. Seth Jackson's Songwriting and Music Business Page A conscientiously maintained site featuring links to: information and resources, musical gear and supplies, recording, publications, music law and copyright, marketing and songplugging, songwriters organizations and industry organizations, publishers and record labels, Web Rings. Songwriters, Composers, and Lyricists Assn. Inc. (SCALA) Proving the international scope of cyberspace, this South Australian site features songwriting articles from SCALA news as well as links to other organizations and services worldwide. Songwriter Universe.com The creation of Dale Kawashima, journalist and music publishing executive. Great information and tools for songwriters. Insightful articles about the music business and lists of music publishers, record companies and publications by state. Tonos The slick Disneyland of songwriter sites is awesome. Founded by veteran writers and writer/producers David Foster, Carole Bayer Sager and Kenneth "Babyface Edmonds. They¹re a class act with great articles, interviews, and lots of contests and collaborative opportunities for new talent discovery. The Velvet Rope The primo music bulletin board. Lots of topics including inside gossip about major labels, industry pros, hirings, fireings, mergers, disgruntled artists. Juicy stuff. Also valuable industry insights from the pros. |
